Underage play
It illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to open a digital gambling account or to play gambling games through retail outlets in Ireland.
As under 18's are a high risk group for the development of issues with gambling, it is recommended not to expose children and adolescents to gambling activities. Exposure and/or involvement in gambling at a young age has shown through academic research to heighten the risk of developing an addiction to gambling later in life.
Studies have shown gambling can have a range of negative effects on minors such as, but not limited to:
- Unexplained absences or late arrival to classes
- A sudden drop in grades or late delivery of assignments/homework
- Spending less time with family and friends and more time gambling
- Losing interest in activities they used to enjoy
- Bragging about gambling wins and downplaying any losses
- Lying or becoming aggressive when asked about time and money spent on gambling
- Prone to mood swings after a win or loss
- Increasing interested in winning and "being right"
There are parental tools within mobile and tablet device as well as Smart TVs. There are also website and app blocking software which can be installed on devices.
We recommend always logging out of any gambling app before giving the device to a child or adolescent.
